Asymmetrical Ellis sweater from Fibre Mood

There is a new Fibre Mood * released and I got to sew a great sweater from it, the Ellis sweater . The Ellis sweater is very quick sew but stands out because of the split neckband and waistband, such a fun detail! And of course the diagonal colour block is right up my alley.   Our girl picked out the fabric herself, at least the fireworks fabric. I picked out the matching fabric. The print works well with the large piece. The sweater is a bit roomy, that is because there is a size 6 and a size 8 and she doesn't fit in the size 6, but the size 8 is still a bit big on her. Well she can grow into it. At textielstad I bought a couple of multicolour threads . I felt this was the perfect project to try it out and indeed it matches the colours in the sweater very well. A softshell Fairtytale coat

A softshell coat for our eldest was already in the planning for half a year. However with pattern tests and other clothing that were more needed, the softshell coat kept on being pushed forward. Then we were going to one of the Frisian Island for a couple of days and the weather forecast wasn't that good. So our girl needed a softshell coat right away (this was about a week before we left). I always work best with deadlines so before we left I had sewed a softshell coat for our eldest.
When I saw the Fairytale Hoodie by Made by Runi I knew it would be perfect to make a coat for our girl. It is a coat that looks like a dress, has a great twirl factor and is long at the back. So it ticks off all demands our girl has for clothing. Although the pattern is desinged for knits already many others have made it in softshell. In the pattern it is recommended to size up one size if you are using softshell. Looking at the size chart (search the Facebook group if you need sizes for the chest, waist or hips, it is not included in all patterns) our girl falls in the size 110 with her chest size. I decided to add 1 cm seam allowance (seam allowance is not included in the pattern) and sew with my serger at a 0,6 cm distance. I am hoping she can still wear it next year so I chose length 122, although she is 112 cm tall. The fit is great!
Because of the fact that I used softshell I decided not to sew any lining in the hood. I finished both the hood and the bottom of the coat with knit binding. I sewed the regular hood and used (of course) the colour blocked sleeves.
Changes I made to the coat: 
  • I added a collar and sewed the zipper inside the collar (lengthened the zipper). 
  • I added a cover at the top of the zipper (my experience is that the top of the zipper can be a bit itching to the chin).
  • I added dumb cuffs to the sleeves.
  • I sewed enclosed arm cuffs, just like I did in my previous soft-shell coat.
Fabric: The pink hummingbird softshell was a coupon I bought at Naaiplezier. The pink softshell was a coupon I bought at Textielstad.
Pattern: Fairytale Hoodie by Made by Runi
Sizing: EU sizes: 80-164 (US: 12m-14y), also available for adults
Options: Standard or Pixie Hood, with or with out Hood, Buttons or zipper closure, colour blocked sleeves or just plain sleeves.
Difficulty: Intermediate, it is not a difficult pattern to sew.

One Thimble 17: Big Day Out Jacket

I just love blog tours! It is so nice to see the different perspective of different sewers on the same projects. The One Thimble Magazine* is a great way to bet to know different designers in one magazine. For me this was my first time sewing something from One Thimble. Although I have sewed a pattern that was part of a previous version from One Thimble ( Orbis Sinny Harem Pants  by Sofilantjes in One Thimble 13 ).  In the newest One Thimble, issue 17 I sewed the Big Day Out Jacket by Ainslee Fox Boutique Patterns .  The Big Day Out Jacket is a denim jacket. My version looks like a denim jacket but actually I sewed the jacket from french terry and sweat fabrics with a denim look. With this jacket you can go all out!
