There is a new Fibre Mood * released and I got to sew a great sweater from it, the Ellis sweater . The Ellis sweater is very quick sew but stands out because of the split neckband and waistband, such a fun detail! And of course the diagonal colour block is right up my alley. Our girl picked out the fabric herself, at least the fireworks fabric. I picked out the matching fabric. The print works well with the large piece. The sweater is a bit roomy, that is because there is a size 6 and a size 8 and she doesn't fit in the size 6, but the size 8 is still a bit big on her. Well she can grow into it. At textielstad I bought a couple of multicolour threads . I felt this was the perfect project to try it out and indeed it matches the colours in the sweater very well. Several things came together that led to this skirt: the little red riding hood fabric that was part of a surprise fabric batch that I bought, our family going to Disneyland and our middle daughter not having a Peppermint Swirl Skirt*. It was time for another peppermint swirl skirt by Candy Castle Patterns!
Remember this amazing skirt that I sewed a couple of months ago? We all adore it! So me, who does not often sews patterns more than once, wanted to sew another one, this time for our middle daughter.
During summer I bought a surprise batch of fabric at Stoffenfeest, which was quite a risk for me. What would I receive, and what types of fabric would I receive? This cotton with little red riding hood on it was not love at first sight. I was really in doubt, what was I going to sew with this? Then we decided to go to Disneyland Paris for a weekend and I knew our middle daughter was in need of a little red riding hood peppermint swirl dress. I mean every girl needs such a dress when going to Disneyland right?
There was only one challenge, the little red riding hood fabric was directional and directional fabric is advised against when sewing a peppermint swirl dress or skirt. The swirl of the skirt and dress goes all the way round and so little red riding hood, the big bad wolf and the three little pigs would turn upside down. I still wanted to use the little red riding hood fabric so I had to come up with a solution.
So what did I do to use the directional fabric but make sure that the characters on the fabric would not turn upside down? I cut all my swirl pattern pieces in two and turned the pattern pieces when cutting the fabric. That is the advantage of using cotton, the way you position your pattern pieces does not matter. I positioned the first part of the upper swirl according to the grainline of the fabric. I turned the second part of the upper swirl pattern piece about 45 degrees to the left. For the first part of the bottom swirl pattern piece I turned the pattern pieces about 135 degrees in comparison to its original position. So basically what I tried to do is make sure that the characters are standing straight in the middle of the pattern piece (of course not everything can be standing straight). I am very satisfied with the result! What do you think?

You need the Kids Peppermint Swirl Dress to be able to sew the skirt.
There is also a Adult Peppermint Swirl Dress.
Sizing: the skirt and dress start at 6M and go up to adult sizes (you can easily adapt the length and waistline of the skirt to your sizes).
Difficulty: It is not a quick sew. I would classify it as an intermediate sewing pattern, it just takes time. Reading the instructions carefully before hand are essential in determining the size.
