Creatieve naai uitdaging: one colour only (Creative Sewing Challenge)

Ik zat lang te twijfelen of dat ik mee zou doen, maar op het laatst heb ik de sprong in het diepe genomen en schreef ik mij in voor de creatieve naamuitdaging van Mamarieke en Stoffenfeest. We werden gematcht aan 1 van de andere participanten van wie we 2 naaicriteria zouden krijgen. Van haar kreeg ik de eerste twee criteria en de laatste criteria krijgen we van Mamarieke en Guus van stoffenfeest. 

Just until the deadline I wasn't sure whether I wanted to participate in the creative sewing challenge by Mamarieke and Stoffenfeest. But in the end I just thought I should take a chance. I was matched to one of the other participants who came up with two sewing criteria for the challenge. She set the first two criteria and the last criteria came from the organising committee.

Mijn 3 naaicriteria:
* Naai iets in één enkel effen, printloos stofje (gezien je heel fijn kleurrijk combineert en naait).
* Gebruik dat ene patroon dat je al lang wil naaien maar steeds uitstelt.
* Gebruik een techniek die je nooit eerder hebt gebruikt.

My 3 sewing criteria:
* Use one uni coloured fabric (since you often combine different colours and prints).
* Use that one pattern that you already want to sew for a long time, but haven't yet.
* Use a sewing technique that you have not used before.

Zij heeft duidelijk naar mijn eerdere maaksels gekeken en gezien dat ik vooral van prints en kleurencombinaties hou. Dus de eerste naaicriteria is zeker een leuke uitdaging. Wow die eerste criteria dat was wel even goed nadenken, iets maken uit 1 effen stofje wat ook nog leuk is (ik vind dat al snel saai). In eerste instantie dacht ik iets voor mijn man te maken, maar toevallig heb ik net tijdens ons laatste naaiweekend een aantal patronen genaaid die ik al een tijd op mijn to sew lijst had staan dus die viel af. Dus dan iets voor 1 van onze meiden.

She obviously took a look at my previous makes and saw that I like prints and bold colour combinations. The first sewing criteria is a challenge, that is for sure. Coming up with something fun that would look great with just one colour was a challenge. I find garments with just one colour usually quite boring. First I wanted to make something for my husband but during our last sewing weekend I sewed a couple of patterns that I did not use before. One was a t-shirt for my husband so I had to come up with something else. I decided to sew something for one of our girls.

Ok, op zoek naar een patroon dat al lang op mijn to-sew-lijst staat. Dat is duidelijk, dat is de Tinny jurk van Straightgrain. Ik heb het patroon sinds de update in 2015 dus dat is al heel wat jaartjes. De moeilijkste criteria was een techniek gebruiken die ik nog nooit eerder hebt gebruikt, tja dat zijn er eigenlijk niet zo veel. Doordat ik inmiddels zo'n 2 jaar test heb ik de meeste technieken ook wel gebruikt. Als je aan het testen bent kom je soms wel eens technieken tegen die je niet zelf uit zou kiezen (of dat je misschien een patroon links laat liggen vanwege een knoopsgat, paspel zak of iets dergelijks). Het patroontesten zorgt er echt voor dat ik veel dingen toch gewoon probeer en heel erg vaak valt het allemaal enorm mee. Ik kwam er zelf niet zo goed uit dus toen heb ik advies gevraagd bij een goede vriendin die ook naait. Zij kwam met het goede idee om te borduren op de jurk. 

Ok: a pattern that I did not use before, well the Tinny dress by Straightgrain is already waiting since 2015 to be sewed up. The hardest criteria was using a technique that I did not use before. I could not really come up with a technique that I did not use. Because I have been testing patterns for around 2 years I have used a lot of different techniques. Sometimes you come across new challenging techniques, but that is what makes pattern testing so fun, you just have to try it and usually it is not that difficult after all. Therefore I decided to ask a sewing friend if she had a good idea. She came up with embroidery.

Je denkt nu misschien borduren, waar dan? Ik borduurde een paar stippellijnen op het lijfje en op de onderkant van de rok. De lijnen moeten het spoor van mieren voorstellen. Ik borduurde er ook nog 3 mieren op. Leuk om een keer te borduren, maar wat gaat dat langzaam zeg. Ik hou duidelijk van een snel resultaat. De jurk moest deze week af om het resultaat te laten zien, dus deze week heb ik enkele avonden op de bank gezeten om te borduren en de jurk af te maken.

Dus, de tinny jurk. Deze jurk heeft enorm veel opties, altijd fijn in een patroon vind ik. Ik maakte de colour block voorkant, maar dan met 1 kleur, met aangeknipte mouwen en een gefronsde rok en voegde paspel toe. Hij past perfect, dat is altijd fijn met katoen.

You might be thinking, embroidery, where? I embroidered a couple of lines on the bodice and bottom of the skirt. The lines should represent the trail of ants. I also embroidered three ants on the dress. I loved trying embroidery, but wow it takes a long time! I clearly love quick results. I needed to finish the dress this week so that meant I had to spend a couple of night on the couch finishing my embroidery and the dress.

So the tinny dress. This pattern has lots of options, which I always like in patterns. I sewed the colour block front, but then in just one colour, with cap sleeves and a gathered skirt and I added piping to the dress. It fits perfectly, that is sometimes a challenge when you sew with cotton.

Ik vond het erg leuk om mee te doen met de naai uitdaging. Ik werd zeker uitgedaagd en ben absoluut tevreden met het resultaat. Ik vind de jurk helemaal niet saai geworden, ook al is het maar 1 kleur (nou ja, de basis jurk dan). Vooral de uitdaging om out of the box met grenzen iets te bedenken was leuk.

I loved participating in the sewing challenge. It was a challenge for sure. I was challenged to think outside of the box within the set boundaries. I love how the dress turned out, not boring at all in just one colour.
